Currently the Victorian Government is undertaking a major program of forest management reform. This reform recognises and values traditional knowledge and the rights of Victoria’s Traditional Owners. It also responds to forest management challenges including climate change, population growth, and changing community needs.
The forest management reform program aims to enable the highest and best value forest uses for Victorian communities.
Forests are vital natural resources. Forests provide clean water and air, habitats for animals, and livelihoods for humans. They prevent soil erosion, mitigate climate change, and enable unique cultural, social and recreational experiences.
Forest management is the process that enables forest protection and use. It includes:
- policy and laws
- strengthening partnerships with Traditional Owners
- research and knowledge
- planning and on the ground action
- compliance and enforcement
- monitoring, evaluation and reporting.
Intensive engagement with the community and the latest science and research is informing reform of forest management in Victoria.
