A passion for the environment and a love of exploring the outdoors motivated Amber Mirtschin to apply to become a Project Firefighter.

Having completed her first season with Forest Fire Management Victoria, she’s found the role to be a perfect way to learn more about the bush and emergency response.

Amber is based at Heywood in the Far South West district. She said no 2 days are ever the same.

“One day you could be off siding machinery, the next you could be clearing bush tracks, and the next you could be sent to the other side of the state responding to a bushfire.”

During her first season, Amber has been mentored by colleagues who have shared their skills with tools and equipment and knowledge about native flora and fauna. The opportunity to learn about local species has been a highlight.

“I’ve had the chance to see some amazing and rare wildlife while working with FFMVic,” Amber said.

“One of my biggest highlights has been seeing a platypus in the wild while working along the Crawford River – that was unbelievable!”

Amber said the most enjoyable part of the job has been having the opportunity to work across the state and explore the variety of forest landscapes in Victoria.

“The most rewarding experience has been assisting in emergency response to fire. It was extremely rewarding to know I am able to be involved in keeping my community safe.

“I love working in the outdoors and adventuring in the bush, and this job gives me the opportunity to do that."

For anyone considering applying, Amber encouraged an open mind and a readiness to learn lots.

“If you’re someone who has a keen interest in the environment, can handle being outside for longer periods of time and gets along well with other people, you’ll love it.”
