Senior Forest and Fire Engagement Officer Birgitte Hutchens has clocked up 7 years with DEECA, but her time working in the engagement space in the Otways began in 2003. In her day-to-day role, she helps build shared understandings and relationships between DEECA/FFMVic, the community and key stakeholders.
As an Information and Warnings Officer, Birgitte is responsible for sharing information and warnings with communities during fires and emergencies – a task she finds rewarding and sees her working alongside some ‘superstar’ public information officers.
‘I really enjoy engaging with communities in a genuine, honest and transparent way…it’s very fulfilling and fundamental to good outcomes,’ Birgitte said.
‘I think we do great work in the Barwon South West, and how we talk with communities, appreciate their local knowledge and values can further inform and enable this work.’
Over the years, Birgitte said she’s seen a cultural shift bring more women and other important voices to the table.
‘Working respectfully and productively with Traditional Owners, women, and other once marginalised groups is now considered essential and valued as diversity brings better outcomes across the board,’ she said.
‘Working in partnership is key – sometimes it can be hard to get your voice heard, but key partners provide a megaphone.’
This International Women’s Day, Birgitte is encouraging everyone to consider ways to support women and others equally in our workplaces and society.
‘We still have way to go, and I ask everyone works together to support genuine gender equity and respect in our workplace and beyond.’
