There’s around 8 million hectares of Crown land across Victoria.
Most of Sally Patterson’s time at DEECA has been working on Crown land projects, ranging from managing the construction of coastal protection structures, coastal planning and, most recently, managing the statewide contaminated land program.
In her current role as Senior Project Officer Contaminated Land, Sally is responsible for delivering environmental assessments, remediating contamination on Crown land and providing training for DEECA staff in addressing contamination on Crown land.
‘Despite initial perceptions of being a dry, boring topic contaminated land is interesting, challenging, and surprising very rewarding,’ Sally said.
‘I really enjoy doing meaningful work to restore the natural, cultural and social values of Crown land, and understanding and managing our contaminated land risks.’
Since starting at DEECA in 2009, Sally has seen an increase in programs advocating for women to be supported in the workplace and take on management positions.
‘I’ve been fortunate to have always worked in an inclusive environment, but I have observed more women stepping into higher level roles in what was traditionally considered male dominated areas, particularly in fire,’ she said.
‘I’m lucky enough to report up to a great female manager who in turn reports to a fantastic female Regional Director, so I’m surrounded by strong, confident and very clever role models.’
This International Women’s Day, Sally is encouraging people to connect with others to learn more and discover new opportunities.
‘If an opportunity arises, give it a go! Don’t be intimidated by roles which you think are out of reach.’
